Homemade Crochet Chicken Nuggets: A Cozy Project That Started at Work

Sometimes the best crochet projects don’t start with a plan — they start with a simple question.
This crochet chicken nugget project began when a coworker approached me at work and casually asked if I could make chicken nuggets. Crochet chicken nuggets, to be exact. I was immediately intrigued. I had seen other makers create little nugget plushies online before, but I had never tried making any myself. Still, I told her yes — or at least that I’d see what I could do.
Little did I know this would turn into one of my favorite crochet projects to date.

Diving Into the Yarn Stash (and the Yarn Store)
The first thing I did was head to my yarn stash, fully expecting to already have what I needed. That’s when I realized… I didn’t have the right color at all. No proper nugget yellow in sight.
So, of course, I did what any crocheter would do — I went to my go-to yarn store and bought way more yarn than I actually needed (lol). For the small chicken nuggets, I ended up using:
Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky
Color: Mustard
This yarn was perfect for small plush nuggets. It’s soft, plush, and works beautifully for amigurumi-style projects.
Research, Inspiration, and Trial & Error
Before starting, I spent time researching other crochet chicken nuggets online. While there were plenty of cute examples, I wasn’t fully satisfied. Most of the ones I found were either:
Too small
Not quite the right shape
Or just didn’t have that nugget look I was going for
So I decided to create my own design.
That process definitely involved a bit of trial and error — adjusting shapes, sizes, and stitches until they looked right. But eventually, I found a form I loved. In the end, I made 10 small crochet chicken nuggets, and I was so proud of myself when I saw them all together. They looked adorable, cozy, and unmistakably like nuggets.

The Surprise Jumbo Nuggets
Later on, I had a realization that honestly felt like fate.
About two years ago, I had bought a yarn simply because I thought it looked pretty — with no idea what I’d ever use it for. It had been sitting untouched on my shelf ever since. When I rediscovered it, I knew immediately it would be perfect for this project.
Using that yarn, I made four jumbo chicken nuggets to go along with the small ones.
The yarn was:
Loops & Threads Royal Velvet
Color: Mineral Yellow
Weight: Jumbo (7)
Fiber: Polyester chenille
This yarn was everything. Soft, thick, cozy, and with a beautiful subtle glossy shimmer that made the nuggets look incredible.
Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that this yarn has been discontinued.
The Discontinued Yarn Heartbreak 💔
Once I realized the Royal Velvet yarn was discontinued, my heart genuinely dropped. I searched everywhere online trying to find more — but it was nowhere to be found.
This was especially heartbreaking because:
It was perfect for jumbo crochet nuggets
I know people would have loved them at my upcoming craft fairs
Finding an alternative has been really difficult
The biggest challenge is that I need a yarn that is:
Jumbo weight (7)
Soft chenille
Yellow
With a slight sheen or gloss
So far, I’ve found some jumbo yellow yarns, but they tend to have a dull, flat look — and it’s just not the same. For now, I may have to stick with making small chicken nuggets, but the search for a replacement continues.

Gifting the Nuggets & the Sweetest Reaction
Once all the nuggets were finished, I threw them into a bag and gave them to my coworker.
She loved them.
She told me they were going to be a Christmas gift for her kids, which already made me so happy. But after Christmas, she came back and told me something that absolutely melted my heart.
The kids loved the crochet chicken nuggets — they were their favorite gift.
They even asked if they could have more made. We all laughed, and I honestly couldn’t stop smiling. Moments like that are exactly why I love making handmade items.

Looking Ahead: Craft Fairs & More Nuggets
Overall, this crochet chicken nugget project was such an amazing experience — creative, challenging, and incredibly heartwarming. I’ll definitely be continuing to make these nuggets for future craft fairs.
My next craft fair is on February 7th, and I’m hoping to have a bunch of crochet chicken nuggets ready for you all. Whether small or jumbo, they’ve quickly become one of my favorite makes, and I can’t wait to share more of them with the world.
