My First 5-Point Afghan Baby Blanket 💙🧶

I’m so excited to finally share a project that feels like a huge milestone for me: I crocheted my very first afghan blanket — a 5-point afghan baby blanket — and it was made with so much love for my new baby nephew. 💙

When I found out I was going to be an aunt again, I decided I wanted to make a baby blanket as a gift. I’ll be honest — I was actually really nervous about this project. I’ve never made a blanket before as a gift, and I usually stick to amigurumi rather than blankets or clothing. Blankets always felt intimidating to me because they take so long to make, and I worried about spending months on something that might not be fully appreciated. Because of that, I had always avoided making them.

Most of my crochet work has been amigurumi simply because it doesn’t take as long and feels more manageable. So choosing to make this blanket was definitely stepping outside of my comfort zone — but I’m so glad I did.

For this blanket, I chose a 5-point afghan pattern that mainly uses the double crochet stitch, which helped it work up much faster than I expected. The finished blanket measures about 18 inches across, making it a perfect size for a baby.

I picked three colors for this project using Premier Parfait Chunky yarn. The colors are:

  • Shell

  • Teddy Bear

  • Turquoise

I absolutely love how these colors came together — soft, cozy, and perfect for a baby blanket.

One of the biggest surprises was how quickly it worked up. It took me about 2–3 hours total, although it’s a little hard to say exactly since I worked on it throughout the day. Knowing I can finish a blanket this quickly has completely changed how I feel about making them!

I gifted this blanket to my brother and sister-in-law at their baby shower, and I’m positive they’re going to love it. I can’t wait to meet my new nephew, who’s due in February.

This project also got my family excited — my oldest son really loved how it turned out. He even joked that I should make him one exactly like it… or just give him the one I made! 😂 I told him he could pick his own colors and I’d make him one. I’m not sure if I can finish it before Christmas (which is only 10 days away!), but I’m definitely going to try.

Overall, this project has completely changed my mindset about crocheting blankets. I’m so excited with how it turned out, and I definitely plan to make more. I’m hoping to have several ready for my upcoming craft show in February, maybe even in some fun Valentine’s color combinations.

This won’t be my last baby blanket — not even close. 🧶💙
