Crocheting a Giant Pickle: A Fun & Expensive Adventure!

I recently embarked on a fun and quirky crochet project: a giant pickle! Standing at 14 inches tall and 6 inches wide, this project was both a fun challenge and a great bonding experience for my kids, who absolutely loved it.

The Yarn Choice

For this pickle, I used a super soft, chunky yarn from Hobby Lobby called Yarn Bee Chunky Knit Velvet in the beautiful Olive color. Now, I have to be honest—this yarn was not cheap! At $22.49 per roll, it definitely put a dent in my crafting budget. And to complete the pickle, I used 2.5 rolls. This made it my most expensive crochet project to date, but the texture and finish were totally worth it!

The Process

It took me about three days to crochet the pickle, and I actually found myself working on it during car rides and travel! The soft, plush texture of the velvet yarn made it really enjoyable to work with, and I loved how it came together quickly. Each row added a little more shape, and before I knew it, I had a giant pickle!

I’ve included a few pictures of the process, so you can see how it evolved from yarn into this squishy, fun creation.

Ready for the Craft Fair

Now that my pickle is complete, I’m excited to say that I will be offering it for sale at my next craft/vendor fair. If you’re in the area, come check it out! I’d love to see the reactions of others when they lay eyes on this quirky pickle. It might just be the perfect conversation starter.

Even though it was my most expensive project, it was also one of the most fun and rewarding. Sometimes it’s not just about the cost, but the joy and satisfaction that comes from creating something unique. Plus, seeing my kids’ faces light up as they helped pick out yarn and watched the pickle come to life was priceless.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a fun project that’s a little out of the ordinary, I definitely recommend trying your hand at crocheting something like this. It may take a little time and money, but the finished product is sure to bring joy—whether you’re gifting it, selling it, or just keeping it for yourself as a quirky addition to your home decor.

Have you made anything unusual or out-of-the-box in your crochet adventures? Let me know! I'd love to hear about your projects.

Happy crocheting! ✨
