Every big adventure begins with a small step—and for me, it was a soft pink bunny with a puff of a white tail.
When I first picked up a crochet hook, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing. I’d seen photos online of these adorable, squishy creatures called “amigurumi,” and something about them made my heart light up. They looked cozy, full of personality, and lovingly handmade. I didn’t have any grand plans—just a quiet curiosity and the desire to make something with my hands.
That pink bunny was my very first attempt. I remember choosing the softest yarn I could find, in a shade that felt cheerful and comforting. I didn’t know how to read patterns properly yet, so I pieced things together from video tutorials, blog posts, and trial and error. I made mistakes—lots of them. I frogged my stitches more times than I can count. But little by little, stitch by stitch, something started to take shape.
When I finally sewed on the ears and added the last bit—the fluffy white tail—I held it in my hands and felt a strange mix of pride, awe, and joy. This bunny wasn’t just a toy. It was a beginning.
What I didn’t realize then was that this tiny creature would change everything.
That pink bunny became the spark that ignited a new passion, and before long, I was completely immersed in the world of crochet. I started learning new techniques, trying more complex patterns, and dreaming up designs of my own. Friends and family began to notice my creations and asked if I could make plushies for birthdays and baby showers. One request turned into five, and five turned into twenty. Before I knew it, I was taking custom orders, opening up shop online, and building a brand around something that once felt like just a hobby.
Now, I run my very own crochet business, creating handmade amigurumi plushies in all shapes and sizes—turtles, bumblebees, dinosaurs, and even little food items with faces. Each one tells a story. Each one carries a piece of that same joy I felt with my first bunny.
That bunny still sits on a shelf in my studio. Her stitches aren’t perfect. Her shape is a little wonky. But to me, she’s beautiful. She’s the dive I took into something new, the reminder that every expert was once a beginner, and that sometimes, the most meaningful journeys begin with the most uncertain steps.
So if you’re standing on the edge of something new—whether it’s picking up a craft, starting a business, or learning a skill—this is your sign: take the leap. Make the bunny. Trust the process. You never know what might come from that first creation.
From one maker to another: it’s never too late to start, and you never know where that first stitch will lead you.
