🐄 Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone: Meet My New Micro Chicken!

There’s something so exciting about walking into a yarn shop without a plan. You never know what colors, textures, or ideas might jump off the shelf and spark a whole new creation. That’s exactly what happened to me this week!

I’ve been spending a lot of time getting ready for my upcoming November craft fair — restocking turkeys, planning new gnomes, and bringing back my popular mini chickens. But this time, I wanted to challenge myself and try something completely new.

So, I took a little trip to my local yarn shop just to browse. You know how that goes — ā€œjust lookingā€ never really works out when there’s yarn involved! šŸ˜„

While wandering the aisles, I stumbled upon a beautiful Afghan yarn, size 2, made of 100% acrylic. It instantly caught my eye. I don’t usually work with yarn this thin (I’m more of a size 4 gal), but there was something about it that made me want to give it a try. The best part? Each skein was only $1.99, so I couldn’t resist! I picked up four different colors — all soft, cozy tones that I knew would be perfect for something special.

When I got home, I grabbed the buttercream colorĀ first. It was light, warm, and creamy — the perfect shade for a tiny little chicken. I have to admit, I was nervous at first. Working with smaller yarn felt a little intimidating, and I wasn’t sure how my stitches would look or if the project would even turn out the way I pictured. But I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone and just go for it.

I started crocheting, and before I knew it, this tiny micro chickenĀ started to take shape right in my hands. It was smaller than I imagined, but oh my goodness — it was adorable! The little details really popped with the finer yarn, and it had such a delicate look that I fell in love immediately.

When I finished the last stitch and added its little embroidered face, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s amazing how something so small can bring so much joy. The best part? It only took about 15 minutesĀ to make!

Now I’m already dreaming about what’s next. I keep joking that I might have to make a whole micro chicken village — complete with tiny coops and maybe a few little chicks running around. šŸ˜‚ I’m not sure if I’ll actually go that far (yet!), but the idea makes me smile every time I think about it.

Right now, I’ve only made one micro chicken, but I have a feeling it won’t stay lonely for long. I’m already planning to make more in different colors using the other skeins I picked up. Each one has its own personality, and they’re just too fun not to keep experimenting with.

If you’d like to make your own tiny chicken, the Mini Chicken Crochet PatternĀ is available as a digital PDFĀ on my website. It’s a super quick, beginner-friendly project that’s great for using up small amounts of yarn.

Or, if crocheting isn’t your thing but you still want to bring a little handmade charm into your home, I’ve also added a few finished mini chicken plushiesĀ to my shop. They make the cutest little gifts, and people loved them at my last craft fair — I can’t wait to bring more this year!

Trying this new yarn reminded me how important it is to step outside of your comfort zone as a maker. Sometimes it’s nerve-wracking, but those moments are often where the magic happens. My little micro chicken is proof of that — small in size, but a big reminder to keep exploring, experimenting, and enjoying the creative process.

🧵 Have you ever tried working with thinner yarn than you’re used to?Ā I’d love to hear how it went!
