Thereās something so exciting about walking into a yarn shop without a plan. You never know what colors, textures, or ideas might jump off the shelf and spark a whole new creation. Thatās exactly what happened to me this week!

Iāve been spending a lot of time getting ready for my upcoming November craft fairĀ ā restocking turkeys, planning new gnomes, and bringing back my popular mini chickens. But this time, I wanted to challenge myself and try something completely new.
So, I took a little trip to my local yarn shop just to browse. You know how that goes ā ājust lookingā never really works out when thereās yarn involved! š
While wandering the aisles, I stumbled upon a beautiful Afghan yarn, size 2, made of 100% acrylic. It instantly caught my eye. I donāt usually work with yarn this thin (Iām more of a size 4 gal), but there was something about it that made me want to give it a try. The best part? Each skein was only $1.99, so I couldnāt resist! I picked up four different colors ā all soft, cozy tones that I knew would be perfect for something special.
When I got home, I grabbed the buttercream colorĀ first. It was light, warm, and creamy ā the perfect shade for a tiny little chicken. I have to admit, I was nervous at first. Working with smaller yarn felt a little intimidating, and I wasnāt sure how my stitches would look or if the project would even turn out the way I pictured. But I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone and just go for it.
I started crocheting, and before I knew it, this tiny micro chickenĀ started to take shape right in my hands. It was smaller than I imagined, but oh my goodness ā it was adorable! The little details really popped with the finer yarn, and it had such a delicate look that I fell in love immediately.
When I finished the last stitch and added its little embroidered face, I couldnāt help but smile. Itās amazing how something so small can bring so much joy. The best part? It only took about 15 minutesĀ to make!
Now Iām already dreaming about whatās next. I keep joking that I might have to make a whole micro chicken villageĀ ā complete with tiny coops and maybe a few little chicks running around. š Iām not sure if Iāll actually go that far (yet!), but the idea makes me smile every time I think about it.
Right now, Iāve only made one micro chicken, but I have a feeling it wonāt stay lonely for long. Iām already planning to make more in different colors using the other skeins I picked up. Each one has its own personality, and theyāre just too fun not to keep experimenting with.
If youād like to make your own tiny chicken, the Mini Chicken Crochet PatternĀ is available as a digital PDFĀ on my website. Itās a super quick, beginner-friendly project thatās great for using up small amounts of yarn.
Or, if crocheting isnāt your thing but you still want to bring a little handmade charm into your home, Iāve also added a few finished mini chicken plushiesĀ to my shop. They make the cutest little gifts, and people loved them at my last craft fair ā I canāt wait to bring more this year!
Trying this new yarn reminded me how important it is to step outside of your comfort zone as a maker. Sometimes itās nerve-wracking, but those moments are often where the magic happens. My little micro chicken is proof of that ā small in size, but a big reminder to keep exploring, experimenting, and enjoying the creative process.
š§µ Have you ever tried working with thinner yarn than youāre used to?Ā Iād love to hear how it went!
You can check out my Mini Chicken PatternĀ or grab a finished plushĀ right on my website. And stay tuned ā the micro chicken village might just become a thing after all! šš
